~ The Sociology Program at Missouri State ~

Welcome to Sociology at Missouri State!

So, you have a daughter or son who is considering Missouri State and studying Sociology or who has already made that decision. We think that, in both cases, it was a wise decision.

About Missouri State...

As a faculty, we have experience in many institutions of higher education throughout the United States. We are confident that the academic programs at Missouri State, and the faculty that delivers them, are of substantial quality. And given the price of obtaining a college education, we feel that it's a real bargain at Missouri State! Not only is the cost of tuition reasonable, the cost of living in Springfield is equally reasonable.

About Sociology...

Sociology is a social science that focuses on social interaction, what happens between the individual and society. What is sociology? It's probably fair to say that it is something different to each person who studies it. For some, it is a way of getting to know one's self. For others, it is a way of understanding the social forces that influence our thinking and our actions.   Such understandings help students succeed in the job market and in society.

Our department offers both a Sociology Major and a Sociology Minor in either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science format. While the General Education Requirement consumes only about 45 credit hours toward the 125 hours needed for graduation, the Major takes an additional 33-36 hours and the Minor only 18 hours.

That leaves plenty of room to consider other disciplines and subjects. The faculty adviser assigned to your daughter or son will work to assure that both academic and vocational needs are addressed.

You can see a list of all the majors and minors at Missouri State depending upon whether a student is seeking a B.A. degree or B.S. degree. The biggest difference between a B.A. and B.S. is the language requirement for the BA. Studying a language other than English can be quite helpful in variety of occupations and professions.

About our faculty...

Our faculty  advise our students, teach, conduct research, and participate in both the community and in their profession. Your son or daughter will have an opportunity to meet and get to know several of them as he or she progresses through the Sociology program.

Some suggestions...

A student who takes a major also has to complete a minor in another field. The only exception to this rule is if the student chooses to complete a comprehensive major (one that requires no minor because it takes so many courses to complete the major).

The Sociology Major is not comprehensive, so a student will need to complete a minor in another field. You can see a list of all the majors and minors your son or daughter has to choose from depending upon whether he or she is seeking a B.A. degree or B.S. degree.

A major in sociology can take more than one minor (that's optional).   Sociology Minors will have to complete a major in a different field. In both cases, how a degree is configured will likely have an impact on potential employers. Our Career Planning and Placement office can provide your child with additional assistance and our faculty will also be happy to help.   Your child need only ask.

As you may know, a student who takes a major also has to complete a minor in another field. The only exception to this rule is if the student chooses to complete a comprehensive major (one that requires no minor because it takes so many courses to complete the major).
