On Monday, May 5th, 2003, the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and the Crime and Society Program proudly presented its brightest students with a variety of awards.

![]() Dr. Gary Brinker, Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) Faculty Sponsor, presided over the awarding of the AKD membership awards. Here the award goes to Calah Arnett, who is a Sociology Major and History Minor from Allenton, Wisconsin. |
![]() Dr. Prosono presented the AKD membership award to Justin Peabody. Justin, a Crime and Society (CAS) major, is an aspiring federal law enforcement officer. |
![]() Dr. John Harms presented the AKD award to Eriko Akaike-Toste, considered by Dr. Harms to have been "one of the most outstnading students I have encountered in my 18 years here" at Missouri State. Eriko, who graduates from Missouri State next December, plans on pursuing graduate studies at the University of Kansas in Sociology and Asian Studies. |
![]() Dr. Gary Brock presented the AKD award to Jennifer Schlosser, who is earning a double major in Sociology and Psychology. She also has a minor in creative writing - her favorite pastime. Jennifer's long-term goals include graduate school and earning a Ph.D. so she can be a teacher at the university level. |
![]() Dr. Tim Knapp presented Jeremy Hinson with his AKD membership award. Jeremy is a sociology major and a media and journalism minor. He has been active in the Missouri State Cycling Association and works at A&B Cycle. He is looking forward to doing free-lance journalism starting next year. Concerning Jeremy, Dr. Knapp said "Jeremy is one of the brightest, hardest-working, and most honest students that I’ve known in 14 years at Missouri State."

![]() Dr. Tim Knapp presents Kathleen Mitchell with her membership award. Kathleen is a CAS major and Finance and General Business minor. She will graduate Cum Laude later this month (May, 2003). After graduating Kathleen plans on beginning her graduate studies in the field of community agency counseling. |
![]() Dr. Mike Carlie presented the membership awards to Corey Steele and Brian Hoff. Corey is planning on joining the Overland Park Police Department and Brian has already been accepted into the next police academy for the Springfield (MO) Police Department. |
![]() Diane Leamy presented Jaime Saab with her membership award. Jamie is presently working for Dee Wampler’s Law Firm. Her future career goals are to obtain a doctorate from either University of Missouri (Columbia) or the University of Missouri (Kansas City) in Sociology/Criminal Justice. She hopes to teach at the higher education level. Jamie is a very bright and motivated individual. |
![]() Diane Leamy presented Elizabeth Unruh with her membership award. Elizabeth will be graduating this December with a Crime and Society major. Her goals after her December graduation include going to the Air Force’s Officer Candidate School. She is presently completing her internship at the Juvenile Office in Greene County and referees amateur soccer games. |
![]() Dr. Karl Kunkel presented Lacey Hacker, a 4.0 student, with her Alpha Phi Sigma membership award. Lacey recently returned from a semester in London during which time she learned much more about the British system of justice. Her plans upon graduation include graduate study. |

Dr. Shahin Gerami presented Lauren D.
Scott with Lauren is seeking a degree in Sociology with minors in Gender Studies and History. She has achieved a cumulative 3.9 GPA and plans to graduate in May, 2003. Lauren has volunteered as a camp counselor for seven years and worked as an advocate in a domestic violence shelter. She has also labored with Habitat for Humanity, been Special Events Chairperson of her building's Hall Council, and joined Alpha Kappa Delta, a sociological honor society. Lauren would like to pursue sociology or gender studies at the graduate level and then focus on a career that furthers civil society locally and globally. |
